It has been proven that a quality machince can increase turnover by up to 20%. Photocopying Terminology ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) An Automatic document feeder allows the user to duplicate a large number of originals automatically. With basic analogue machines, the documents can only usually be copied in a single sided manner. With digital technology, there are a host of other options that enable alterations to be made. RADF (Reversing Automatic Document Feeder) works in the same way as the ADF, but allows multiple double-sided copies to be made. Analogue Copiers Analogue is the original technology used to photocopy using lenses. Rather than scanning and digitising images like modern digital machines, analogue machines use a “light lens” to duplicate original document. Photocopier Bypass Tray Normally positioned on top or at the side of a photocopier, the bypass tray allows the user to copy onto alternative paper than that stored in the feeder trays. Put simply, it is a time saving device that enables the user to copy onto different paper from that in the feeder draws, without having to open the draws and switch the paper Catch tray The catch tray is where the photocopies stack up after being printed. Corona wire A corona wire is a magnetically charged wire that transfers the toner from the drum onto the paper. PPM (Pages per Minute) PPM is the maximum printing speed of a photocopier. Also know as CPM or Copies Per Minute. Digital Photocopiers Digital photocopiers use the most up-to-date technology and actually convert the visual data on the original document into computer code. Following this, the computer code is used to program the laser printer which then creates the final copy. Colour Copiers Modern digital machines enable the user to print full colour duplicates thanks to their use of laser print technology. This function was unavailable with analogue technology. Duplex Duplex basically refers to the system used in photocopiers to create double-sided copies. Facia The facia is basically another term for the control panel. Finisher A finisher is usually an optional attachment that can collate and staple together copies into brochures or calendars. Image shift This function allows the user to move the image slightly to make room for binding. On larger digital photocopiers, this can be adjusted so that images are adjusted automatically. This feature is useful for users who have a finisher and wish to create bound documents. LCT (Large-Capacity Tray) The large capacity tray is designed to hold in excess of 1000 sheets of paper. They are most often found on larger machines designed for larger volumes. They are normally free standing, as opposed to the usual ‘clip-on’ trays found on smaller machines. Multifunctional Multifunctional photocopiers incorporate a host of other features that might include a fax machine, network print capability, a digital storage device (document hard drive), a scanner and in some cases, digital enhancement tools. Paper Trays / Drawers These are where the paper is stored ready to be collected by the photocopier. They are normally found at the bottom of the copier and can be adjusted to hold different sizes of paper. They can normally store up to around 1000 pieces of paper and are useful for users who do moderate amounts of copying, such as an estate agency. Platen This is the glass panel under the lid. It is where the original document is scanned before being printed. Pre-selection This functional enables the user to choose the number of copies they want to print. Enlargement / Reduction This is another term for the zoom function and enables the user to increase or decrease the size of the document being copied. Resolution The resolution of a photocopier demonstrates the quality or sharpness of an image. It is normally measured in DPI, or Dots Per Inch, therefore 600 dpi would mean there is 600 x 600 dots per square inch. Many modern copiers can offer a much higher print resolution. However, designers who need their imagery to be extremely detailed generally only require these. Scan-once/print-many This applies to digital photocopiers that enable the user to scan a document and store it on the in-built memory for later use. Many modern digital photocopiers also allow images and documents to be transferred to them from a computer workstation via a network cable. Simplex (rarely used) This is the technical name for photocopiers that cannot print double-sided copies. Sorter A sorter enables pages to be copied and arranged in a particular order. This is particularly useful when making multiple copies of a document with several pages. Smart Colour Smart colour machines offer control over how many colour prints can be produced. This feature enables certain users to be authorised to print either a limited or unlimited number of colour copies as well as restricting colour usage to those who don’t require it. This can be set up easily through creating pin numbers. Stand Most average sized copiers come with a stand that usually doubles as a storage cupboard for paper and toner. Toner Toner is the substance that is used to create the imagery on the paper. Initially, it is either a coloured or black ink powder that is magnetically charged. The toner is then applied with heat and pressure to keep it permanently attached to the paper. > Zoom Function The zoom function enables the user to increase or decrease the output size of the duplicated image. Generally, the image can be adjusted in % increments e.g. to double the size of the image, the zoom function would be adjusted to +100%. Digital photocopiers tend to offer greater flexibility in size adjustment due to the lens restriction with analogue machines. However, images can suffer from pixelation if enlarged too much.
